Snorkeling.

The high visibility of our waters makes for a great opportunity to spot marine life.

Fly high and feel the roar of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels
Pensacola is lucky to be the home base for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the official flight demonstration team of the Navy. While they tour all over the country, we’re fortunate that they practice most Tuesdays and Wednesdays, March – November and host two shows a year, one on Pensacola Beach and one at NAS Pensacola.

Pedal your way to adventure
With popular trails like the Edward Ball Nature Trail and the Gulf Islands National Seashore, there are multiple places to bike for all levels. For the non-traditionalist, book an electric bike.
Good to Know
Snorkeling in Northwest Florida Beaches offers a unique experience, thanks to clear waters, abundant marine life, and scenic coastal environments inclusive of the Gulf and Bay locations. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, the region has something to offer.
Here's what you should know:
Best Time to Snorkel:
- Spring and Summer: The warm waters from May to September are ideal for snorkeling in Northwest Florida. Water temperatures range from 70°F (21°C) in spring to 80°F (27°C) in summer, and the visibility is usually the best during these months.
- Fall: While fall months can be cooler, the water is still warm enough to enjoy snorkeling. Plus some of the more popular locations are less crowded.
- Winter: Water temperatures do drop in the winter, and visibility may decrease, but if you're prepared for cooler conditions, you can still enjoy snorkeling, especially if you plan on wearing a wetsuit.
Marine Life You Can Expect to See:
- Fish Species: You can expect to see a variety of fish, including parrotfish, snapper, grouper, blue tangs, and amberjack.
- Invertebrates: Snorkelers often encounter hermit crabs, sea urchins, starfish, and octopus.
- Sea Turtles: Occasional sighting of sea turtles occur especially around the jetties and coral reefs.
- Sharks: While rare, small species like nurse sharks and blacktip sharks may be spotted in deeper waters, but they're generally not a danger to snorkelers.
- Dolphins and Manatees: While not common in every location, you might see these playful creatures, especially around protected areas and harbors.
Water Conditions & Safety:
- Visibility: Northwest Florida is known for its clear waters, however, visibility can vary based on weather, tides, and season.
- Tides and Currents: Some areas, especially around jetties and passes, can experience strong currents. Be sure to check tide charts before heading out and consider guided tours if you're not familiar with the area.
- Safety Tips:
- Wear a flotation device if you're not an experienced swimmer.
- Stay with a buddy to ensure safety.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the environment.
- Watch out for boats and personal watercrafts: Always be mindful of boat traffic and personal watercrafts, especially in highly trafficked areas.
Snorkel Gear Rental and Tours:
- Many local beach shops, and even grocery chains offer snorkel gear for purchase, including masks, fins, and snorkels.
- You can also find full-day or half-day snorkeling tours that include guided trips to the best spots and have rentals available.
- Consider booking a boat tour to reach places more remote reefs that aren't easily accessible from shore or explore a number of artificial reefs that are accessible via paddleboard or kayak within a mile from the shoreline.
Environmental Considerations:
- Coral Reefs: While there aren't large coral reefs like those in the Caribbean, Northwest Florida Beaches is home to hundreds of artificial reefs as large as sunken vessels and as small as concrete modules that attract marine life.
- Marine Conservation: Be mindful of the local marine environment. Don't touch or disturb marine life, and avoid standing on reefs or delicate sea grasses. It's important to respect wildlife and minimize your impact on the ecosystem and ensure your safety.
Other Tips:
- Bring water and snacks: Some locations might not have immediate access to food and water.
- Wear appropriate footwear: If you plan to walk to the water or explore rocky areas, sturdy sandals or water shoes are a good idea.
Stay hydrated and wear sun protection: Florida’s sun can be intense, even when you're in the water.
