Paddling.

Over 30 of Florida’s state paddling trails can be found in Northwest Florida Beaches.

Fly high and feel the roar of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels
Pensacola is lucky to be the home base for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the official flight demonstration team of the Navy. While they tour all over the country, we’re fortunate that they practice most Tuesdays and Wednesdays, March – November and host two shows a year, one on Pensacola Beach and one at NAS Pensacola.

Pedal your way to adventure
With popular trails like the Edward Ball Nature Trail and the Gulf Islands National Seashore, there are multiple places to bike for all levels. For the non-traditionalist, book an electric bike.
Good to Know
Thanks to beautiful waterways in unique locales, paddleboarding in Northwest Florida can be an amazing experience for first-timers and experienced boarders alike.
Here's what you should know:
Best Time to Go
- Spring and Fall (March to May, September to November): The weather is usually warm, the waters are clear, and the summer visitors haven't fully arrived or have started to taper off.
- Winter: It can be cooler but still mild, and the water conditions are typically calm.
- Summer: Although the weather gets hot, and popular spots more crowded, the water temperature are ideal for long paddles.
Water Conditions and Safety
- Safety & Technique: If you’re a beginner, consider taking a lesson to learn proper paddleboarding techniques, such as balance, paddling strokes, and how to get back on your board if you fall off.
- Flatwater vs. Gulf Paddling: Many areas in Northwest Florida offer calm bay waters perfect for flatwater paddleboarding, but if you’re venturing into the Gulf or more exposed areas, be aware of potential waves, tides, and currents. Beginners should stick to the calmer waters of the coastal dune lakes and lagoons.
- Tides: Pay attention to tides if you’re paddling in places like bays, sounds, or estuaries. Some spots can be affected by significant tidal changes that may impact your trip.
- Weather: Thunderstorms can roll in quickly, especially in the summer. Always check the forecast before heading out, and consider the possibility of sudden weather changes.
Wildlife to Look Out For
- Northwest Florida Beaches is home to many delicate ecosystems, so it’s important to paddle responsibly to avoid disturbing wildlife and damaging delicate seagrass beds.
- You might encounter dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, and a variety of fish. While most of these creatures are harmless, it's important to respect their space and avoid disturbing them.
- Dolphins: These playful creatures are commonly seen in the waters around Gulf Coast areas.
- Manatees: While manatees are less common, they're occasionally spotted in the warmer waters of bays and inlets.
- Sea Turtles: Especially during nesting seasons, keep an eye out for sea turtles as you paddle.
- Birdwatching: Northwest Florida has incredibly diverse birdlife, from pelicans to ospreys, which can be seen while paddling along the coast.
Rentals and Tours
- If you don’t have your own board, not to worry there are plenty of rental shops in the area offering everything from beginner to advanced paddleboards. Many offer delivery right to you and guided tours that focus on local wildlife and ecosystems.
- Guided tours such as sunset paddles, dolphin-watching tours, or eco-tours through mangroves and estuaries can be great if you're unfamiliar with the area or want to learn more about the local environment.
What to Bring
- Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and rash guards are a must for protection.
- Water & Snacks: Make sure to stay hydrated, especially in the warmer months.
- Water Shoes: Depending on where you're paddling, there may be sharp shells or rocky areas that could be tough on bare feet.
- Dry Bag: If you’re bringing valuables, a dry bag is a good way to keep them safe and dry while you paddle.
Skill Level & Experience
- Beginner-Friendly: Many of the bay areas, sounds, inlets and coastal dune lakes are calm enough for beginners. You can take a lesson or rent a board to practice in protected waters.
- Advanced Options: For those with more experience, you can explore open Gulf waters, surf-style paddling, paddle out to nearby islands, or even check out the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail for a more adventurous experience.
