Fly high and feel the roar of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels
Pensacola is lucky to be the home base for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the official flight demonstration team of the Navy. While they tour all over the country, we’re fortunate that they practice most Tuesdays and Wednesdays, March – November and host two shows a year, one on Pensacola Beach and one at NAS Pensacola.

Good to Know
Due to its diverse ecosystem, opportunities to fish in Northwest Florida Beaches are bountiful from the Gulf and estuaries, to bayous, rivers, and freshwater lakes. The region is renowned for both inshore and offshore fishing, and there's something for every level of angler.
Here what you should know:
The Breakdown of Types of Fishing
- Inshore Fishing: This typically involves fishing in the shallow waters of bays, estuaries, and nearshore waters. Species like redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and pompano are common targets and trips can be as short as 2 hours.
- Offshore Fishing: The deeper waters of the Gulf of Mexico offer opportunities to catch larger game fish such as red snapper, grouper, amberjack, tuna, and mahi-mahi. These trips typically begin at a minimum of 4 hours.
- Freshwater Fishing: Freshwater lakes and rivers provide ample opportunities to fish for bass, crappie, catfish, and panfish. Freshwater fishing is possible on your own via kayak or paddleboard or alongside a guide.
- Pier and Surf Fishing: Many areas have piers where anglers can fish for various species and spot wildlife while they learn to cast a line. Surf fishing is also popular, especially for pompano, whiting, and redfish.
- Kayak and Canoe Fishing: The region’s many small bays and estuaries make it perfect for kayak fishing. You can often get into hard-to-reach areas and catch species like redfish and trout in shallow waters.
What’s in Season?
- Spring (March-May): Spring is an excellent time to fish, especially for inshore species like redfish, trout, and flounder. Offshore, it’s a good time for cobia, kingfish, and snapper.
- Summer (June-August): Summer offers great offshore fishing, especially for tuna, mahi-mahi, and grouper. Early morning or late evening are ideal times.
- Fall (September-November): Fall is a prime time for both inshore and offshore fishing. Redfish, trout, and snapper are abundant.
- Winter (December-February): While it can be cooler, the winter months are still good for fishing, especially for species like redfish and trout. Offshore fishing can be less productive due to rougher seas, but it's a quieter time for inshore fishing.
Fishing Regulations
- Fishing Licenses: A Florida fishing license is required for both residents and non-residents. You can obtain one online here or at local tackle shops.
- Seasonal and Size Limits: There are strict regulations for various species, especially for those targeted by commercial and sport fishing, such as red snapper and grouper. Make sure to check the latest fishing regulations for species-specific size limits, bag limits, and closed seasons.
- Bag and Size Limits: Be aware that certain species, like red snapper and grouper, have specific seasonal openings and closed periods. There are also size and bag limits that must be followed.
Weather and Safety
- Be prepared for sudden changes in weather, especially during the summer months when thunderstorms can develop quickly.
- When fishing with kids always ensure they are wearing a lifejacket.
- Bring plenty of sunscreen, water, and snacks, as fishing trips can sometimes be long.
- If fishing offshore, make sure to have the proper safety equipment like a radio, GPS, and first aid kit.
Guides and Charters
If you're new to the area or prefer a guided experience, charter captains and fishing guides are passionate about sharing the ins and outs of the sport. These passionate guides, many of which are lifelong locals, can take you to the best spots and provide you with the gear and knowledge you need for a successful trip. Charters are available for both inshore and offshore fishing and guides are available to help you navigate some of the lesser known locales.
Local Fishing Communities and Resources
- Tackle Shops: Local tackle shops provide up-to-date information on fishing conditions, as well as the latest gear and bait. Many also offer rental equipment.
- Fishing Forums & Social Media: Local fishing communities on social media platforms and forums can be helpful for getting tips on where to fish, what’s biting, and recent catches.
